Role: Senior Content Design Lead | Acting Product Owner & Researcher Focus: Growth Design, A/B Testing, and Ecosystem Trust
Impact: 50% Increase in Post-Onboarding Feature Adoption
I. The Challenge: Bridging the Post-Onboarding Gap
Following the initial launch of the Phone Link onboarding sequence, telemetry data indicated a significant drop-off in feature engagement. Users successfully completed setup but lacked a clear "path to value," leading to system abandonment.
Without a dedicated researcher on the immediate team, I transitioned into a dual-role—leveraging a Product Owner mindset to bridge the gap between technical metrics and user psychology.
II. Strategic Discovery & Acting Research Leadership
I initiated and led a Discovery Sprint to identify high-value feature clusters and mitigate user friction.
Research Orchestration: I authored the research protocol and moderated usability sessions, recruiting a cross-functional squad to synthesize feedback and identify behavioral patterns.
Grid-Based Information Architecture: Partnered with UX Design to prototype a modular grid layout. This allowed users to scan and self-select features immediately following onboarding, replacing sequential lists with instant agency.
Retention Logic: To maintain long-term trust, I architected a "What’s New" system—a modular content framework that ensures returning users are proactively notified of evolving ecosystem capabilities.
III. Validation: A/B Testing & Governance
We executed targeted A/B tests to validate our "Path to Value" hypotheses. I managed the Content Governance to ensure variant language prioritized clarity over marketing fluff:
Test Variable | Control (Baseline) | Variant (Grid + What's New) |
IA Strategy | Sequential, list-based discovery. | Grid-Based Selection: Instant visual agency. |
Retention | Static UI with hidden updates. | "What's New" Module: Proactive feature education. |
System Trust | Implicit system value. | Explicit ROI Guidance: Clear onboarding-to-action transition. |
IV. User Story & Acceptance Criteria
To ensure the Product Increment delivered measurable ROI, I defined the following requirements for the engineering sprint:
User Story: “As a first-time user, I require a visual overview of high-value features post-onboarding, so that I can confidently activate the tools that fit my immediate needs without navigating deep menus”
Key Acceptance Criteria:
Zero-Latency Loading: The feature grid must render immediately upon onboarding completion.
Punchy ROI Microcopy: Each grid tile must lead with a functional benefit, not just a feature name.
State-Aware Logic: The "What's New" module must only trigger for returning users with a verified version-delta.
V. ROI & Professional Impact
By spearheading the research effort and providing Agile Leadership, our team achieved a 50% increase in usability metrics. This project demonstrated the high ROI of integrating Content Design early in the technical discovery phase, resulting in a resilient system that prioritizes user trust through visual hierarchy and proactive engagement.
