Role: Lead Content Designer / Product Owner (Acting Researcher)
Focus: A/B Testing, User Trust, and Cross-Functional Leadership
Impact: 50% Increase in Usability Metrics
I. The Challenge: Post-Onboarding Friction
Following the initial onboarding sequence for Phone Link, data indicated a significant drop-off in feature engagement. Users felt overwhelmed and lacked a clear starting point, which diminished system trust. Without a dedicated researcher on the team, the project required a Product Owner mindset to bridge the gap between design and user validation.
II. Agile Strategy & Research Leadership
I took the initiative to lead a Discovery Sprint to identify high-value feature clusters:
Acting Research Lead: I drafted the research protocol and interview questions, and recruited a cross-functional team to review testing feedback and identify patterns.
Collaborative Design: Partnered closely with the UX Designer to prototype a Grid-Based UI. This layout allowed users to scan and select features immediately after onboarding, providing a clear "path to value."
Returning User Engagement: To maintain long-term trust and retention, I architected a "What’s New" feature as a modular add-on, ensuring returning users were consistently aware of evolving capabilities.
III. Validation: A/B Testing & Iteration
We executed a series of A/B tests to validate our hypotheses. I managed the Content Backlog to ensure variant language was optimized for clarity and trust:
Test Variable | Control (Baseline) | Variant (Grid + What's New) |
Information Architecture | Sequential, list-based discovery. | Grid-Based Selection: Instant visual access to all features. |
New Feature Awareness | Static UI with hidden updates. | "What's New" Module: Proactive notification of latest tools. |
User Trust | Implicit system value. | Explicit Feature Guidance: Clearer onboarding-to-action transition. |
IV. User Story & Acceptance Criteria
To ensure the final Product Increment met our 50% usability goal, I defined the following:
User Story: “As a first-time user, I want a visual overview of available features after onboarding, so that I can confidently select the tool that best fits my immediate needs.”
Key Acceptance Criteria:
Discoverability: The feature grid must load immediately following the final onboarding screen.
Actionability: Each grid item must contain clear, punchy microcopy that defines the feature’s specific ROI.
Definition of Done: The "What's New" module must trigger only for returning users who have not seen the latest version update.
V. ROI & Professional Impact
By stepping into an Agile Leadership role and spearheading the research effort, we achieved a 50% increase in usability. This project demonstrated the power of Stakeholder Alignment between Content, UX, and PM, resulting in a system that prioritized user trust through visual clarity and proactive engagement.
